Getting dirt or a stain on your carpet can be infuriating when you’re trying to do everything you can to keep your home in beautiful condition. Before you go out and buy all the most expensive dry carpet cleaner you might want to have a shot at using some tried and tested carpet cleaning treatments.

Soda for Silk and Carpets

The same tip for removing stains from a silk blouse also applies to carpet. The all purpose cleaner “club soda” is a lifesaver especially for red stains, and since stains often happen at parties, have a little soda on hand to quickly get rid of red wine spills or red dyes that are often found in drink mixes and popsicles.

If soda isn’t strong enough, try a diluted peroxide solution. This may do the trick. Just be careful because peroxide can bleach the color from the carpet too. It works best on light color carpets.

Tough Pet Odors and Accidents

Cat urine and pet accidents in general can be the toughest smells to get out of a carpet even after the stain has been cleaned and the visible affects have vanished. Baking soda is an odor neutralizer and peroxide is a disinfectant that attacks bacteria that causes bad odor. Mixing these two ingredients and using them to treat a pet stained area may help to eliminate the odor.

However, if the area is large and obvious and the smell persists, dry foam carpet cleaner and a machine will be required. You may have to get the entire carpet cleaned by professional carpet cleaners because there isn’t an effective quick fix to eliminating persistent animal odors. The other problem is that many pet foods contain dyes and this in turn causes stains when they have accidents.
